pp108 : Creating an Organization Unit Type

Creating an Organization Unit Type

This topic describes the procedure to create an organization unit type.

You must first create an organization unit type to be able to define an organization model.
The organization modeler is populated with three different organization unit types.

  • Dependent or Hierarchical Unit: Select this unit type to represent hierarchy in the organization model. A dependent unit always has a parent unit except the root unit. A dependent unit can have one or more child units.
  • Independent or Virtual Unit : Select this unit type to represent project teams, working groups, task forces and so on. Independent or virtual units consist of members of different hierarchical units. Independent unit types are also used to design matrix organizations or project organizations. These units do not have any parent units and have an informal relationship with other units.
  • Assistant Unit : An Assistant Unit is not a part of hierarchy. It provides assistance to its parent unit. An Assistant Unit contains only one parent unit and does not contain any child units.
Note: In addition to the three default unit types that are described above, a user can add custom organization unit types. These types have their dedicated colors and icons but inherit the connector behavior of one of the three default unit types.
  1. Select a starting point and select (Organization Unit Type) to create an organization unit type. The Untitled Organization Unit Type- Organization Unit Type dialog appears with a view of the General tab by default.
